UST Graduate School of Law Dean Jacqueline O. Lopez-Kaw, DCL, Faculty Council Member Atty. Rey Alejandrino, DCL, and academic staff Atty. Allan Gepty, DCL met with the Ambassador of Hungary to the Philippines, the Hon. Titanilla T贸th, on May 7, 2024 (Tuesday) to discuss potential collaborations with local universities.

According to Dean Lopez-Kaw, the discussions with Hungarian diplomats centered on student exchanges, faculty residency, and co-advisorship of GS Law theses and dissertations. In a Facebook post by the Hungarian Embassy, they expressed optimism in 鈥渂ringing together higher education institutions to maximize student and faculty potential, most especially with our Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship program.鈥

The Graduate School of Law offers the degrees Master of Laws and Doctor of Civil Law programs online. Students from both the Philippines and abroad are welcome to apply.

The Department of History鈥檚 Assoc. Prof. Maria Eloisa P. de Castro, PhD and the Graduate School鈥檚 Prof. Regalado T. Jose have been named Regular Members representing the Private Sector of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, a body under the National Commission for Culture and the Arts. Their appointments were announced by the country鈥檚 Presidential Communications Office on May 7, 2024 (Tuesday).

De Castro is an expert in ecclesiastical and education history. Her graduate studies focused on the Philippine secondary education from 1865-1898 and the role the Church and UST played in it, as well as the Dominican accounts of imprisonment during the Philippine Revolution of 1898-1900. A decorated academic, she received a 2019 Individual Research Award from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts for her doctoral dissertation. She also won the Best Book in History plum from the National Book Awards in 2007 for her work entitled La Naval: Triumph of a People鈥檚 Faith. She sits in the board of the Philippine National Historical Society, Inc. and the Manila Studies Association, Inc.

Meanwhile, Jose is UST鈥檚 immediate past Archivist (2010-2021) and a professor of the University鈥檚 MA in Cultural Heritage Studies. An expert in church heritage, he was named a Centennial Awardee for the Arts in 1999. He was involved in the recommendation and eventual declaration of twenty-six churches as National Cultural Treasures in 2001. A respected scholar, he publishes and presents studies in international conferences, such as those held in Spain. During his time in the Archives, the Baybayin documents became UST鈥檚 fifth National Cultural Treasure.

The presence of international students, academic staff, and collaborations was touted as UST鈥檚 greatest strength as it made its debut in the Times Higher Education Asia Rankings, where it was ranked in the 601+ bracket. This position made it rank #3 among Philippine universities.

International outlook, which accounted for 7.5% of the total score, includes proportion of international students, proportion of international staff, and international collaboration. With a score of 67, this was UST鈥檚 strongest suit, followed by Teaching and Research Quality.

Teaching includes indicators such as teaching reputation, staff-to-student ratio, and doctorate-to-bachelor鈥檚 ratio, among others. Meanwhile, Research Quality credits citation impact, research strength, research excellence, and research influence.

The (CCWLS) and the College of Fine Arts and Design (CFAD) hosted Open Forms, a talk on bringing poetry out from the pages with curator and writer Roy Voragen on April 30, 2024 at the Beato Angelico Building鈥檚 Main Gallery.

Voragen spoke about the relationship among language, body, and city, linking his practices as a poet and curator to show connections between the visual arts and writing.

For Voragen, artists and writers must engage with the city and its languages and use them as material to create new modalities and fresh expressions of art. 鈥淚 invite you to make things. Even [in creating] meaningless stories, you do creativity. Even meaning is form [鈥 try to meet the city, try to see how it will affect your body,鈥 Voragen said.

Voragen has shared his art and craft in the neighboring Southeast Asian countries. He served as a curator of 1335MABINI Gallery in Ermita, Manila from 2017-2019.

鈥淥pen Forms鈥 is part of the CCWLS International Writers and Scholars Lecture and Conversation Series, whose lineup consists of Filipino writers and scholars based abroad. Among them were Ninotchka Rosca, Sabina Murray, Gina Apostol, Miguel Syjuco, Cecilia Manguerra Brainard, R. Zamora Linmark, Eugene Gloria, Marivi Soliven, John Blanco, Lara Stapleton, M. Evelina Galang, Fidelito Cortes, Nerissa Balce, Amalia Bueno and Robert Nery; and foreign nationals, like Robin Hemley Tim Tomlinson, Dennis Haskell, Xu Xi, and Yukari Yoshihara.

Open Forms will serve as a space for students to explore experimental or hybrid poetry, paired with visual and other forms such as video, photography, collages, and performances.

The event was curated by Assoc. Prof. Nerisa Del Carmen Guevara of CCWLS and the Faculty of Arts and Letters and Assoc. Prof Mary Ann Venturina-Bulanadi, PhD of the College of Fine Arts and Design.

Graduate School of Law (GS Law) Class of 2016 alumnus and Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Usec. Allan B. Gepty won the Intellectual Property Champion award, conferred by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) during the Gawad Yamang Isip Awards Night held on April 29, 2024.

The award seeks to honor two stalwarts who have contributed significantly to developing the country’s intellectual property system. Usec. Gepty was recognized for his invaluable contribution during his stint as the Deputy Director General and Officer-in-charge of IPOPHL. During his term, the GS Law faculty member reinforced and developed the said government unit’s advocacy, policy-making functions, international relations, and programs.

The theme of the event was “IP and the SDGS: Building our common future with innovation and creativity” and caps the National IP Month.

IPOPHL is the government agency mandated to administer and implement State policies on intellectual property.

Three Thomasians emerged in the top ranks of the April 2024 Physician Licensure Exams, administered by the Professional Regulation Commission.

Edison Ong claimed the 2nd rank with his 89.08% rating. Vergel Enriquez registered an 87.67% score to earn the 6th place. Lastly, in the 8th spot, Eryll Alea tallied an 87.08% rating.

UST was likewise named the second top-performing school after notching an 84.45% passing rate, producing 56 new Thomasian doctors. The national passing rate was 55.50%.

The UST College of Tourism and Hospitality Management was co-host of the 16th Philippine Food Expo, a 3-day celebration of Filipino culinary expertise. The event was held at the World Trade Center Metro Manila last April 12-14, 2024. The event鈥檚 theme for this year was Western Visayas. The event was marked by various culinary competitions, cooking demos, seminars, and a large exhibition of over 300 vendors.

As co-host, CTHM handled the Culinary Challenge Competition Briefing, held on March 3, 2024, at the Buenaventura Garcia Paredes, O.P. (BGPOP) Building鈥檚 Multi-function Room (MFR), while the Food Styling & Photography Competition was also held at the BGPOP Lobby and Mezzanine on March 23, 2024. Both events were internally organized by the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management (CTHM) 3HCE1鈥檚 Solasta Productions, led by Mr. Wyett White Lee as the course facilitator and Mr. Rod Fredric S. Villamarin as the Overall Chairperson, as part of their partial fulfillment of the requirements for THM52027: Introduction to Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Events Management.

The highly anticipated event commenced with a remarkable turnout, welcoming 3,074 guests on its opening, where The 91短视频 Chorus of Arts and Letters set the tone for the event with a moving invocation followed by a stirring rendition of the national anthem.

The expo’s opening statements were delivered by a roster of prominent figures who have played pivotal roles in the agriculture and food industry. Among them were Mr. Roberto Angelo O. Amores II, Director of PhilFoodEx; Hon. Cynthia A. Villar, the Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Food; Hon. Francisco Tiu P. Laurel Jr., Secretary of the Department of Agriculture; Mr. William Tiu Lim, also a Director of PhilFoodEx; and Mr. Sergio Ortiz Luiz, President of the Philippine Exporters Confederation, Inc. Their insights set a forward-thinking agenda for the expo, emphasizing the importance of innovation, sustainability, and collaboration in the food sector.

The three days featured culinary competitions such as the Philippine Regional Table Setting Competition, Kitchen Masters, PINASarap Breakfast, Modern Filipino Dessert, Healthy Pasta, Mystery Ingredient, and the UST Dream Team competition, featuring 2nd to 3rd year Culinary Entrepreneurship and Hospitality Leadership students from the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management. The PFE Knowledge Challenge also debuted during this year鈥檚 expo, challenging students鈥 knowledge on various topics.

Additionally, Dr. Reinald A. Andaya, CHE, a UST CTHM Academic Staff and the Laboratory Coordinator, held a seminar on the third day called 鈥淣amit Gid!: Iloilo City’s Journey for the UNESCO Creative City on Gastronomy.鈥

The culinary competitions were hosted by Mr. Louis San Sebastian and Ms. Clarisse Ricablanca, 3rd-year Culinary Entrepreneurship students from UST CTHM. On the other hand, the PFE Knowledge Challenge was hosted by Mr. Louis Anjello Cheng and Ms. Anna Mae Pa帽o, also from the same college.

The final day’s highlight was the awarding ceremony, a moment of recognition and appreciation for all participants who represented their schools with pride and passion.

The 16th Philippine Food Expo was organized by the Philippine Food Processors and Exporters Inc. (PHILFOODEX) and Cut Unlimited Inc. It is supported by 3HCE1’s Solasta Productions of the UST CTHM as partnered organizers and student marshalls.
