Researchers from the University’s Center for Theology, Religious Studies, and Ethics (CTRSE) and the Research Center for Social Sciences and Education (RCSSED) have recently secured a two-year research grant from an international non-governmental organization. Their project, titled “Assessing the Current Landscape of Catholic Christianity in the Philippines: Towards Synodality,” aims to provide an overview of the state of Catholic Christianity in the country, focusing on communion, participation, and mission, while acknowledging both its positive and negative facets.

The research team presented their project to Most Rev. Pablo Virgilio S. David, President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, and Mr. Charles Bertille, the representative of the funding organization, during a meeting at the Frassati Building on February 14, 2024.

Leading the project are Prof. Pablito A. Baybado, PhD (CTRSE) and Prof. Florence C. Navidad, EdD (RCSSED), with Assoc. Prof. Allan A. Basas, SThD, Asst. Prof. Philip L. Fuentes, PhD, SThL, and Assoc. Prof. Marites R. Redoña, Ph.D. of CTRSE, along with Fr. Vladimir Echalas, SOLT, SThD, Head of the CBCP Research Office, serving as Research Associates. Fr. Louie R. Coronel, OP, EHL, UST Secretary General, and Prof. Joel C. Sagut, PhD, CTRSE Director, serve as consultants for the project.

Dr. Emmanuel M. Batulan from the UST Office of the Secretary-General, along with project assistants Ms. Daphne C. Santos and Ms. Rechelle M. Basco, were also present during the meeting held on February 13, 2024.

The Institute of Religion and the Center for Theology, Religious Studies and Ethics of the 91Ƶ, Manila will hold this year’s Saliksikan and Leonardo Legaspi, OP Lectures on November 13, 2023, (Monday), from 9:00 – 6:00pm. The hybrid event will UST Central Laboratory Auditorium and Zoom. This year’s conversation has the theme, “Cultivating Global Citizenship within the Framework of Caring for Creation” and will bring together theologians, philosophers, and scientists to provide their perspectives on the issues of ecology and climate change. CTRSE Director Joel C. Sagut, PhD and College of Science Dean Rey Donne S. Papa, PhD will be the main speakers.

Moreover, the event is part of the ongoing collaboration among the Faculty of Theology of the University of Fribourg (Fribourg, Switzerland)under the chairmanship of Prof. Helmut Zander for Comparative History of Religions and Interreligious Dialogue, the Dominican University (Ibadan, Nigeria), and the 91Ƶ (Manila, Philippines). The collaboration is dubbed as CoMIF (Collaboration among Manila, Ibadan and Fribourg) and will host the afternoon Symposium/Workshop on ‘Ecology and Climate Change.’

A total of 121 faculty members were recognized in the areas of Arts and Humanities, Education and Social Sciences, Health and Allied Sciences, Science and Technology, and Sacred Sciences by the Office of the Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation during the Recognition Program held on March 16, 2018 at the Paredes Building, UST. They were granted the Gold Series Award and the Silver Series Award for AY 2014 to 2016 and the International Publications Award for AY 2014-2017. UST Secretary-General Rev. Fr. Jesús M. Miranda, Jr., O.P., and Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation , assisted by the directors of the respective research centers gave the awards.

The Gold and Silver Series awards are granted to faculty members in recognition of their research productivity and leadership in their respective fields of specialization within the period covered by the award. These awards are based on research publications (author by-line should indicate the 91Ƶ as address in the publication), ongoing research involvement, and tenure in the University.

The Gold Series

The awards, given every two years come in two categories: Research Category and Creative Works Category. The Gold Series Award Research Category is granted to tenured full-time faculty member with Ph.D. or M.D., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in UST except for faculty affiliates of the UST Graduate School, authored at least five research papers published in refereed journals/ scholarly books in the last five years, with at least two of these published, one of which is an international (Web of Science/ Scopus) publication, or has one patent or utility model granted, within the period covered by the award, or, authored at least two scholarly books in the last five years, with one of these published within the period covered by the award, with ongoing research under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University, and, with at least one research disciple.

Under the Creative Works Category, the awardee should be a tenured full-time faculty member with Ph.D., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in UST except for faculty affiliates of the UST Graduate School, authored at least three creative or critical works in the last five years, with at least one of these published within the period covered by the award, and, with ongoing studies (creative projects) under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University.

The Silver Series

Under the Research Category of the Silver Series, the award is given to tenured full-time faculty member with M.Sc. or M.A., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in UST, must have authored at least three research papers published in refereed journals/scholarly books in the last five years, with at least one of these published, or has one patent or utility model granted, within the period covered by the award or, authored at least one scholarly book in the last five years published within the period covered by the award and, with ongoing research under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University. Under the Creative Works Category, the faculty member must be tenured full-time faculty member with M.Sc. or M.A., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in UST, must have authored at least two creative or critical works in the last five years, with at least one of these was published within the period covered by the award, and, with ongoing studies (creative projects) under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University. A Research disciple refers to junior faculty members, graduate students, medical interns, and medical residents.

International Publications Award (2014–2017)

The International Publications Award is presented to all full time faculty members teaching only in UST for the publication of their research outputs in journal/s and books indexed in the Web of Science/ Scopus with IF Quartile Metrics Ranking. Author byline should indicate the 91Ƶ as address in the publication.

The (CRSE) held its first Academic Discourse last November 21, 2016.

This first Academic Discourse featured the lectures of , who completed his Doctorate in Canon Law at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas (the Angelicum), Rome; , who finished his Doctorate in Sacred Theology at UST ; and who acquired his Ph.D. Philosophy from the UST .

The Academic Discourse series is meant to feature the inaugural lectures of professors in the Institute of Religion and the Ecclesiastical Faculties, and researchers affiliated to CRSE, who have recently earned their Doctoral degrees.
